במקרה זה, הסרט מגולל את מעלליהם של שלושה תיכוניסטים שזוכים בכוחות-על באופן מסתורי. בתחילה, מובן שהם שמחים על כך, וגם מנצלים את הכוחות כדי ליזום ולבצע שלל מתיחות שמסבות להם עונג רב.


אולם במהרה הם מגלים כי כפי שנאמר עוד ב"ספיידרמן", עם כוח גדול מגיעה גם אחריות גדולה, והכישורים הייחודים שלהם משנים את חייהם לחלוטין, ולאו דווקא לטובה. הדבר מעמיד אותם ואת החברות שלהם במבחן קשה.

מה שהופך את הסרט למרתק עוד יותר היא העובדה שהוא מצולם באותו סגנון של "קלוברפילד" ו"פעילות על-טבעית": כלומר, כל ההתרחשויות מובאות לנו דרך מצלמת היד שבה הדמויות תיעדו את מה שקורה להם בזמן אמת.
